Crashed Pioneer

ABOVE & BELOW: A Twin Pioneer which crashed in a padi field near RAAF Butterworth on 28 April 1967. All on board survived and were treaed at the Butterworth Base Hospital. Two Despatchers were on board; ‘Lofty’ Davidson and Ted Duffy, both of Iskander Troop, 55 AD SQn RCT. The Pioneer, XN321 of 209 Sqn RAF, was on a supply drop mission and came down from about 600 feet, 300 yards into the padi field. Engine failure caused by water in the cross feeds led to the crash. According to one crash report, “An engine failed on takeoff. A forced landing was carried out, but the undercarriage collapsed”. A bit of an understatement. A couple of ‘Twin Pins’ came down for a similar reason.
