John Filkins: I was involved in the locating of the family of Cpl Phil Bryant who was killed in the crash of Dakota KN360 in August 1950 near Kampong Jenera, Kelantan, Malaya. My wife seeing the MOD’s BBC TV request for them, and later myself on the NMBVA website. My had wife grown up as a friend and neighbour of the Bryant family in Lee on the Solent but we had lost contact with the remaining sisters some years ago.
After considerable searching I located one sister (Sheila) now living in Spain and was able to put the MOD officer in contact with her. Subsequently she notified Phil’s other surviving sister (Vicky), still living in Hampshire to provide the required DNA for identification purposes. I was also able to provide the sister with a considerable amount of historical data and photos plus commemorative memorial honour roll information, relating to their brother Phil, both in Malaya and at the National Memorial Arboretum, of which the sisters and family were totally unaware existed.
We petitioned Gosport Council on his sister’s behalf, for Phil’s name to be added to the Lee on Solent War Memorial. The case was taken up by a councillor, and Phil’s name was finally unveiled in a ceremony that took place on 11th Nov 2011.
